Clear Skies Solar, Inc. Background
What do a school in New Jersey, a civic center in California, and a dairy farm on the Pennsylvania border have in common?
Each has exchanged traditional energy systems for renewable solar energy, and each has done it with the help of
Clear Skies Solar, Inc..
Founded in 2003 by Ezra J. Green, a successful entrepreneur with 25 years of construction experience as founder and leader of a general contracting firm focusing on high-end residential construction,
Clear Skies Solar, Inc. (CSG) provides turnkey solar electricity installations and renewable energy technology solutions to commercial and residential customers across the United States.
Since its launch, Clear Skies Solar, Inc. has installed solar power systems for municipalities, real estate developers, agricultural locations, office and residential complexes, storage facilities, manufacturing plants, schools, and more. The company’s forte lies in sub-1MW commercial sector installations, agricultural and petroleum field systems, residential installations through developer partnerships, and highly economical remote monitoring services.
In a burgeoning industry, CSG distinguishes its presence in the marketplace through its construction capabilities, pioneering innovation, comprehensive in-house solutions, and proprietary technology.
Furthermore, while some solar energy providers outsource work to subcontractors,
Clear Skies Solar, Inc. handles all processes in-house, from permits, paperwork, and financing to systems design, engineering, and installation. CSG’s in-house architects create installation designs that meld with existing structures and landscapes, and in-house research and development professionals build both high and low tech products that lower installation costs while expediting installation times.
Utilizing proprietary installation technology, CSG is able to execute fast and secure installations under even the most adverse environmental conditions, ranging from scorching 160°F heat on the West Coast to snowy -3°F on the East Coast.
As energy costs continue to rise, it is no longer only the elite few who are transitioning from fossil fuel-powered energy to more environmentally friendly and cost efficient renewable energy. Offering the uncommon union of solar energy knowledge and construction expertise, CSG stands poised to design and build tomorrow’s renewable energy landscape.
Clear Skies Group is headquartered in Massapequa Park, New York and maintains satellite offices in California, Florida, and soon to open in Arizona.
Solar Power Fact Sheet
How is solar energy used?
- Solar energy works by using solar panels to convert the sun's radiation into electricity to supply power to the appliances used in our businesses and homes.
- Solar energy works by converting the sun's rays into heat with the use of solar thermal collectors for warming water, i.e. for the swimming pool or hot water heater.
- Solar energy works by converting the sun's rays into hot air for heating buildings with the use of solar thermal collectors.
How do solar panels work?
- Rays of sunlight hit the solar panel (also known as a photovoltaic/ PV) and are absorbed by semi-conducting materials such as silicone. Electrons are knocked loose from their atoms, which allow them to flow through the material to produce electricity. This process whereby light (photo) is converted into electricity (voltage) is called the photovoltaic (PV) effect.
- An array of solar panels converts solar energy into DC (direct current) electricity. The DC electricity then enters an inverter. The inverter turns DC electricity into 120-volt AC (alternating current) electricity used in most standard appliances. AC power enters the utility panel in the house. The electricity is then distributed to appliances or lights in the house.
Which buildings are suitable for solar installations and how are the systems fitted?
- Solar panels are suitable for almost any building (homes, schools, office buildings, etc). Systems can either be:
- Ballasted roof-mounted. This system does not penetrate the roof but securely mounts the system on the roof-top
- Ground-mounted. This system can be built onto a variety of mounting fixtures depending upon the property available (i.e. car-ports, in a field, etc).
- Roof-mounted. Roof mounted space truss system secures the system to parapets on the walls and the building’s sturdier shell rather than the roof.
What are the benefits of having solar panels?
- Pollution prevention: Using solar energy does not release greenhouse gases or other pollutants.
- Added land value: Much of the land with the best solar resources is inadequate for farming, grazing, or habitation. Solar power generation adds considerably to this land’s financial value.
- Added property value: Solar systems lower operating costs and increase property value.
- Distributed generation – because PV systems do not use the central electrical grid for transmission, but generates power directly where it is consumed, it lowers the stress and transmission load on the central power grid, reducing the likelihood of blackouts during times of high demand.
- Peak Performance at times of highest demands – PV systems are most efficient during the hottest parts of the day. This decreases demand on the grid and can provide a big savings boost as this is when customers are charged the most for electricity.
- Jobs and security: Electricity from concentrating solar power is produced domestically, providing manufacturing and installation jobs for Americans and helping to reduce energy security concerns associated with depending on foreign countries for oil and natural gas.
What kind of savings and economic benefits can be realized by investing in a solar system?
- A dairy farm in New Jersey installed a 25kW solar system, which is now saving $5,000 per year in energy costs. In addition, the dairy farm is receiving $9,000 per year in Renewable Energy Credits (REC) from its utility company for the next 10 years, a monetary incentive for each kW of solar energy produced by the system.
- St. Joseph’s School in New Jersey installed a 175 kW solar energy system at no cost to them through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), which is a financial agreement available to non-profit entities. Through the PPA, the school’s electricity bill will be offset by $30,000 per year, for the next 20 years.
What maintenance do solar panels require?
- Solar electric has no moving parts, which means little to no maintenance at all. Solar panels typically have a life span of 25-30 years.
Are there any programs that can help save on the cost of a system?
- There are 24 states that offer rebate programs for a significant portion of the system cost. The programs may vary from state to state.
Are there any payment options when purchasing a solar system?
- You can purchase the system outright.
- You can lease. Terms vary from 5 -12 years and are renewable.
- Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) – A third party purchases the system and sells electric power to your facility at a fixed, lower rate with little or no capital outlay.
